A little reflection about
how I got here,
where I am and
where I’m headed.
My Story
I never really fit into the “average girl” box. I was artistic and physical and liked sports. This landed me in the “late bloomer” category.
That is when the well-intentioned mismanagement of my “symptoms” began. Like so many young girls, I was put on birth control before college because “It will make things easier and protect me from my own poor judgement.”
This led to a mammogram at 17, breast biopsy, a large part of my cervix being removed, weight gain, panic attacks, migraines and hormonal emotional rollercoasters. One day I said “This is insane. I don’t even know what is going on anymore.” I stopped the birth control, started yoga, found a diverse beautiful group of friends that became family, gained a very important seed of trust in myself and began self-advocating.
I saw similar patterns with my friends. Formula fed because doctors convinced our moms it was better, tonsils removed because of too many sore throats, mouths filled with mercury to protect our teeth, scented everything to cover our own essence, candy and soda filled vending machines for a quick snack before practice, antibiotics for this, steroids for that, take Motrin every month because your “not real” periods land you in bed, deal with it all - its normal and you are blessed.
Well beautiful women, I’m here to tell you that, while sadly my story is not unique and is considered “normal”, it is not at all how our incredible bodies are supposed to be operating, nor the path we need to take.
We women have an incredible capacity to “deal”, to “tough things out”, to hear and accept “it could be so much worse count your, blessings.”
The truth is, it is not normal. PMS is not normal. “Dealing” is not our birth right and while the compassionate, caring people within the medical healthcare system are using all of their knowledge and tools to well intentionally help us, they just don’t have the correct tool box for wellness support and preventative health care. Nor the space to critically think and serve with their intelligence, as they are trapped in pre-determined protocols and health insurance boxes.
In my mid-20s I began self-advocating, trusting my intuition more, and learning how to listen and trust my body. I got swept up in the foodie movement, became a certified yoga instructor, and started studying nutrition outside of the soccer/ weight lifting paradigm. I embraced different yoga practices, teas, herbs and learned food is our medicine and became an organic farmer.
This led to two healthy home-births after being told I most likely would never be able to conceive, let alone carry to full term. The anxiety and panic dissolved. I learned that my cycle is a super power.
I learned we were never taught anything about our hormones or menstrual cycle or the incredibly important role they hold over our health and wellbeing. I learned how to support that cycle with proper nutrition and practices so we can thrive and cultivate our best lives, rather than learn how to “deal”.
Now that I know and have a diverse and informed tool box, I want you to know too! So you can live your best life without the fog of hormonal imbalance symptoms we have been taught to just accept and deal with.
I’m here to tell you that your body’s innate intelligence is a super power. If we can give ourselves that proper nutritional support, prioritize our wellness and understand our cycle, we can use our cycle to support and fuel our lives. Absolutely spectacular! And, the truth!
